New Student Orientation FAQ’s

We have put together a number of Frequently Asked Questions for you to look at as we get closer to our getting together for this summer New Student Orientation.

Do I need to attend Orientation?
It is required for all new first-year students to attend Orientation and all the programs offered. Orientation can make the difference in creating a great beginning to your college experience. It is the best way to become familiar with the College, faculty, staff, and to meet your classmates.

However, we understand that some students live too far to travel for Orientation, or other life issues can get in the way of attending. If you are unable to attend, please contact the Office of Admissions, 802-447-6300 or

What time do I need to arrive for Orientation?
Check-in on the first day of Orientation is from 11:00 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. with the formal program beginning at 12:30 pm. The Orientation program ends the following day around noon.

Can my family stay overnight?
Families are not permitted to spend the night on campus. There are many wonderful options for overnight accommodations close to campus. A samplings of hotel suggestions can be found here.

Where will I be staying?
Students will be staying with a roommate in one of the campus residence halls. There will be Orientation Leaders staying in the residence halls and available for any assistance you may need.

Will I be fed?
Dinner on campus the first night will be provided in the dining hall. Restaurant recommendations will be available to parents and families for dinner. Everyone is invited to breakfast in the Dining Hall on the second day of Orientation.

What do I need to bring?
You will need to bring your own bed linen, blanket or sleeping bag, pillow (because everyone sleeps better with their own pillow), a bath towel and washcloth, personal items (ex. toothbrush, toothpaste, shower items, etc.), sneakers or comfortable footwear, casual clothes, a pen, an open mind and a sense of humor. If you are someone who gets hot at night, feel free to bring a fan for your room. If you are someone who gets cold easily, please bring an extra blanket or sleeping bag.

If I am flying or taking a train/bus in for Orientation, how do I get to campus?
There are a number of students and families coming in from all over the country, and even the world! The closest airport and train stations are located in Albany, NY. We advise trying to arrive the day before your scheduled Orientation so that you do not miss out on anything.
