New Partnership with Alchemist Energizes BATS Trail Mix Event

On Saturday, May 6, from 12 to 6 p.m., Southern Vermont College (SVC) will host the 2nd Annual BATS Trail Mix Event. This year, SVC students in the Sports, Recreation and Tourism Management program will once again partner with Bennington Area Trail System (BATS) to promote awareness, access and safe usage of our area trails.

Bennington was voted Runner Up for “Best Sports Town” in Vermont in the recent Vermont Sports issue. According to the Vermont Trails and Greenway Member Organizations, last year Vermont trail systems recorded nearly 410,000 visitors. On average, 61 percent of trail users were from out of state and spent around $440 per visit. The 2015 to 2016 season noted $30.8 million in total annual economic activity supported by trail users. The SVC and BATS partnership is in its early stages, yet data indicates that trail system growth can be a driver for our local economy.

This year’s event will offer something for everyone. Outdoor adventurers can demo mountain bikes, trail shoes and other gear. Craft beer enthusiasts can enjoy the latest brews from the Alchemist. Youth will have access to bicycle safety checkpoints and guided activities. Three-time Olympian, Andy Newell, will be on hand to visit with guests and speak about the importance of open access trails and health, wellness and training. All other guests are invited to join us for an afternoon of social networking, trail use, music and refreshments on SVC’s majestic mountainside. Some event components will be fee-based.

SVC president Dr. David Rees Evans is enthusiastic about this partnership. “I’ve been thrilled over the past couple of years to have SVC partnering with BATS to improve the College’s trails and to enhance access and recreational opportunities around Bennington. Our trails are better than ever, and the network is growing every year,” Evans said. “Now, generous support from iconic Vermont brewery, the Alchemist, adds an exciting dimension to the Second Annual Trail Mix, and should entice more people to SVC to see what makes the College special and to enjoy our spectacular campus and excellent trails. One of SVC’s strategic initiatives is to emphasize the value of our location, and having people come to experience the place and enjoy legendary Alchemist beers is a great way to do that.”

This year, event partners will include: Alchemist, Southern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC), Highlander Bicycle, Nature’s Closet, Catamount Glass, Scott Bicycles, Intense Cycles, Origin 8, Salomon, Inov-8 and more.
