Internship FAQ for Employers

WHAT IS AN INTERNSHIP?
Internships are designed to provide our students with a guided introduction to the professional working world as they begin to mold their career goals. Internship tasks and duties must be designed based on student goals and objectives.
HOW MANY HOURS PER WEEK WILL THE STUDENT WORK?
For every one academic credit, the student must complete 40 hours on site (approximately 10 hours per week).
DO ALL STUDENTS RECEIVE ACADEMIC CREDIT?
Students who complete internships through the SVC Office of Career Development and Internships receive one academic credit for 40 hours completed with an approved site.
AM I REQUIRED TO PAY INTERNS?
The decision to pay an intern is solely at the discretion of the employer. Private, for-profit employers are subject to the U.S. Department of Labor Fact Sheet. If an intern is paid, that person is considered a temporary employee.
HOW DO I RECRUIT AN INTERN?
Internship planning begins for students the semester before the course is completed. CLICK HERE for the process and timeline. Contact the SVC Office of Career Development & Internships at careers@svc.edu to discuss available internships with your organization.
