CDOC Members Speak at Restorative Justice Class

Recently, students from the Restorative Justice class at Southern Vermont College had the privilege of speaking with four members of the Connecticut Department of Correction (CDOC). Captain Scott Salius, Officers Valerie Cersosimo and Lee Aubert, and Counselor Matt Lata shared their experiences involved in working at CDOC. Specifically, they spoke extensively about their present assignment. All four are interacting with inmates in an area of a maximum security prison in a unit devoted to neutralizing gang interaction of inmates while in the prison and upon their release. Each speaker gave their own backgrounds and what lead them to their careers in corrections. When asked how they deal with the stress involved in prison work, Captain Salius stated, “The job is easier when you have good people you work with.” Assistant Professor Renée Merges expressed her gratitude on how interested and engaged the CDOC members were with the class and also for their honesty about the specific daily challenges as well as the benefits involved in working in the corrections field.
