Support Services and Accommodations

Some services we provide may include the following:

  • Extended Time

    Extra testing time is commonly referred to as extended time. For most test-takers, the standard extension is time and one half. This means that for a test that normally takes 60 minutes, a student may be allowed 90 minutes. Double time may also be allowed. Decisions are made on a case-by-case basis, keeping in mind the type of accommodations being provided, the disability involved, and the type of test.

  • Alternate Environment
    One common service/accommodation is an alternative location for exams. Students who take an exam or quiz in the reduced-distraction LDSP area can make those arrangements by clicking here and completing the form to let the LDSP staff know they will be coming.  If at all possible, make these arrangements at least two business days before the exam.  If your request can’t be accommodated, LDSP staff will get back to you; otherwise, you can assume your request was granted.

  • Audit Textbooks

    Southern Vermont College has an active subscription with Learning Ally (link to https://learningally.org/). If a student has a print-based disability, the LDSP can order textbooks in audio format through Learning Ally. Students can access Learning Ally on an iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Android phone or Android tablet, Chromebook or computer. Students use a Learning Ally username and password to login into Learning Ally’s reading app, Learning Ally Link, to download and read audiobooks.

  • Subject Area Tutoring

    Students can also sign up for tutoring, academic counseling, or make other appointments with many of the CTL staff using http://ctl-at-svc.genbook.com. Our sensitive, dedicated, and skilled staff offers professional tutoring services. Participants should typically plan for 30-minute tutoring sessions no more than two to three times a week.

    Regularly-scheduled tutorial sessions may focus on:

    – academic content areas;

    – study techniques, note-taking strategies, test-taking skills, and time management/organizational skills; and

    – learning compensatory strategies based on individual learning styles.

  • Technology

    Assistive technology resources include noise-cancellation devices, Learning Ally spoken texts, Kurzweil text-to-voice software, voice recorders, Dragon Naturally Speaking voice-to-text software, and Inspiration concept-mapping software.
