Hometown: Bronx, N.Y.
Born and raised in the Bronx, Christelle fell in love with the Southern Vermont College campus during her visit. She was in awe of the beauty of the state of Vermont, which is so different from home. Christelle was thrilled when she received an acceptance letter to SVC. As a freshman, she’s not sure what she’ll choose as a major. After taking a variety of different classes during her first year, she’ll be ready to decide on a field of study.
At SVC, Christelle is a member of PRIDE, an organization of lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgendered students and allies seeking to promote social change and create a more inclusive community on campus and beyond. She is also a member of Colleges Against Cancer, a nationwide collaboration of college students, faculty and staff dedicated to eliminating cancer by initializing and supporting programs of the American Cancer Society. Some of Christelle’s favorite classes are Human Biology with Professor Barry Flanary and a Quest for Success class with Professor Jennifer Ufnar.
Christelle gets along great with her roommate. She comments, “We’re good for each other. We have the same interests and we help each other.” During her spare time, Christelle likes to hang out with her friends in their residence hall suites and walk downtown or to the nearest Walmart for supplies, etc. She also likes to hike, read and listen to music besides video chatting with friends and Skyping with family members.
Christelle’s culture identity comes from family members who are Puerto Rican, Dominican Republican, African American and Cherokee Indian. Currently, Christelle’s mother is continuing her college education. Christelle speaks of her mother stating, “I admire my mom because her story is incredible. She always puts her kids before herself. Mom always has faith in me. I want to do my part and help her out as best as I can; I want to make my mother proud.”
