Hometown: Hoosick Falls, N.Y.
Major: Criminal Justice
Guided by her parents’ words of wisdom that “education is the most important thing,” senior Shawnee Webster is using SVC as a launching pad to fulfill her dream of working with juveniles.
Shawnee says she loves working with children, especially ones with a troubled life. She would like to guide them in the right direction. The Hoosick Falls, N.Y., native is majoring in Criminal Justice at SVC. After graduation, she plans to go on to graduate school and major in psychology.
“I chose SVC to help me take the next big step in my education and to one day reach my dream of helping children that are in need of guidance,” says Shawnee. “One of my favorite quotes is from Gail Devers. ‘Keep your dreams alive. Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination, and dedication. Remember all things are possible for those who believe.’”
Shawnee likes SVC because of the small classrooms and one-on-one interaction with professors. “Southern Vermont College is a way different experience than a bigger school. You get to know everyone,” she says.
Shawnee says Professor Al Chapleau, her counselor and CJ instructor, helped her tremendously during her first year at SVC, and English Professor Erin Kaufman was a great mentor.
Shawnee is a member of the SVC women’s soccer team. At home, nearby, she likes to hang out with friends, play some soccer and spend time with her family which is most important to her.
