First-Year Students

Why choose SVC?

With a historic mansion as our primary academic building, a 371-acre campus, a faculty committed to the joy of teaching, and a friendly, safe College community, SVC is a habitat for learning, for discovery, for achievement. As reflected by our 12:1 student-to-faculty ratio, we provide an environment where students are recognized as individuals, with unique talents, interests and goals.

How do we choose our students?

Because of our individualized approach, we use a portfolio method to determine a student's eligibility. We understand that one person may excel academically, while another may exhibit excellent leadership skills. Our admission's review, therefore, considers each student's entire application, and as a result, the SVC community is made up of diverse individuals.

Application Process

We encourage our applicants to apply online. We waive the $30 application fee for those who do.

For those who prefer to submit a paper, you may download the PDF application here. A $30 application fee will be charged for non-electronically submitted applications.

At SVC, we have a rolling admissions policy which means we accept applications until all available spots for the incoming freshman class are filled. All applicants are strongly encouraged to complete and submit the application as soon as possible.

Application for admission:

  • Official record of your high school transcripts;
  • Official SAT or ACT scores;
  • Two letters of recommendation;
  • Interviews are strongly recommended but not required;

Once you have submitted the above documentation, your application will be considered complete and will be thoughtfully and carefully reviewed by the Admissions staff.

You may submit additional materials to showcase your special talents, abilities, passions and awards that may not be reflected in your personal statement or recommendation. These materials give you the opportunity to demonstrate what you will contribute to the campus community at Southern Vermont College.

Supplemental materials may include:

  • Additional letters of recommendation;
  • Additional essays;
  • Résumé of community service experience, work experience and/or leadership experience;
  • Visual or performing arts portfolio;
  • Class work portfolio.

At any time, you may contact the Office of Admissions to check on the status of your application.
